This podcast is about the remodeling contract you are about to sign with your contractor.
If you are planning to remodel, do your homework.
- Go the the showrooms, ask questions, get make and model numbers of products, take pictures and get samples.
- What are the lead times for products you like
- What are the retail costs (don’t expect to be given builder pricing)
- Give the product information to your contractor so he doesn’t present you with a contract with “allowances.”
- Read the contract thoroughly before you sign it.
- Get a completion date for your project
- Don’t give the contractor permission to select your finishes
- Know about change orders

Great overview, Nancy!
Many homeowners are unaware of “cost-plus” arrangements. This type of contract can provide the homeowner with more control of finish costs of the project. Any budget over-run(s) are directly attached to the homeowner’s choices.
Ask LOTS of questions – even the simple & ‘silly’.
Any contractor who applies pressure to sign/collect $$$ is a giant RED flag.
I, definitely, agree… do not allow the builder/G.C. select finishes!
