Play Ball . . . or not!

Baseball season, America’s pastime, is here again. Hot dogs, peanuts, popcorn and cold beer are part of the fun of going to a game.   There’s nothing like being at the field to experience the excitement of a grand slam or a double play for the dedicated fans.

Our family had box seats at Yankee Stadium for years.  They were located behind the home dug out 3 boxes from the field surrounded by other box seat holders, many of them famous.  I grew up constantly having to listen to the Dodgers and the Yankees on the radio and TV, but this was not my choice and baseball was not my pastime. I went to one game at Yankee stadium and was ready to leave after the first inning.

In my opinion, baseball is very boring, which is probably the reason why they have the 7th inning stretch.  The average game is just under 3 hours long.

I think it’s about time to make some changes to this game to speed it along.

THE GAME:  Baseball is played for 9 innings, but when the score is tied, it can go on forever.  The longest game in major league baseball history was a 25-inning affair on May 8, 1984, when the Chicago White Sox beat the Milwaukee Brewers, 7-6. The game lasted 8 hours and 6 minutes. OMG!

CHANGE:  The game should go 5 innings, no longer. I think 3 innings would be enough, but the rules say 5 innings make for an official game.

THE GAME:  3 strikes and your out!  4 balls and you walk to first base.

CHANGE:  2 strikes and 3 balls would move the game a little faster.

THE GAME:   Nationally broadcasted games have 41 minutes of commercials.

CHANGE:  Well, I guess someone has to pay for TV time, but this is over the top.  The average ticket price ranges from the highest – Chicago Cubs at $58.57, to the lowest for the Diamondbacks at $19.65. By the way, 2018 World Series tickets are currently averaging $1,600 per ticket.

There is no solution for this one.  If we have less commercials, the ticket prices most likely will go up which would lead to more empty stadium seats.  I’m not going there.

THE GAME:  Baseball fans have been programmed to pair peanuts, popcorn, hot dogs and beer with baseball.  This is not a healthy diet.

CHANGE:  More salad, fruits and healthy drinks should be available at the stadiums. Sitting and eating junk foods for 3 hours can lead to a nasty end.

THE GAME:  Fighting between players at a baseball game is typically uncommon, but when it does happen, it reduces these players to spoiled, bratty, childlike boys and delays the game.

CHANGE:  Anyone who instigates a fight should be thrown out of the game and fined big bucks. That should include EVERYONE involved.  If the fans want to see a fight, they usually go to a hockey game, LOL!

If you are a baseball fan, please let me know if you are on base with these suggestions.
