Furniture is getting softer—and a whole lot bigger.

One of the latest looks showing up in home design is oversized “puffer” seating. Think deep, cushy sofas and chairs with rounded, inflated-looking shapes that practically beg you to sit down and stay awhile.

After years of streamlined, tailored furniture, this trend is all about comfort, softness and casual living. Puffer-style pieces can make a room feel relaxed and inviting while also adding a sculptural element to the space.

But there is a catch: oversized means oversized. Before you fall in love with that enormous sofa, make sure you have the room for it. These pieces can quickly overwhelm a small living room and interfere with traffic flow.

And then there’s the practical question: How easy is that beautiful, soft upholstery to clean?

The idea of furniture that looks comfortable enough to actually live in, but like every design trend, puffer furniture works best when it fits the room—not when the room has to be designed around it.

Comfort is definitely having a moment in home design. Just remember, bigger isn’t always better.
