Hanging a chandelier too low creates an awkward obstacle; hanging it too high makes it feel disconnected from the space. Here is the quick-reference guide to getting the placement right every time.
The Rules of Thumb
The Baseline: Hang the bottom of the fixture 30 to 36 inches above the dining table surface (based on a standard 8-foot ceiling).
High Ceilings: For ceilings over 8 feet, raise the fixture 3 inches for every additional foot of height.
9-Foot Ceiling: 33 to 39 inches above the table.
10-Foot Ceiling: 36 to 42 inches above the table.
Sizing & Proportion
Width: Choose a chandelier that is ½ to ⅔ the width of your dining table (or roughly 12 inches narrower than the table width).
Clearance: Keep the edge of the chandelier at least 6 inches inside the table perimeter so guests don’t bump their heads when sitting down or standing up.
Quick Pro Tips
Visual Weight Matters: Heavier, solid fixtures (like drum shades) feel better hung a couple of inches higher, while airy glass or open lantern styles can hang a bit lower.
Anchor to the Table: Always align your junction box or swag hook over the center of the table, not necessarily the center of the room.
Atmosphere: Always install a dimmer switch and opt for warm lighting (around 2700K) to keep dining comfortable.
