We are barely into a new year and we also now have a new President. Mainstream media has made us all aware that not everyone is thrilled about our new Commander-in-Chief. President Trump is in good company as some of the great Presidents in history faced hostility when they came into power. Presidents Andrew Jackson, Abe Lincoln, FDR and Richard Nixon all faced great enmity when they took office.
Between the time President Obama was elected and his Inauguration Day, a little known fact is the stock market suffered the worst drop in history – down 19.94 percent. After President Trump was elected the stock market zoomed up 1,200 points to an all-time record. This sharp contrast should be a very good economic indicator seeing how Wall Street responded.
The media has paraded all the protests to Trump’s Inauguration going so far as to say protesters would prevent President Trump from taking office. What the protesters did was to smash shops and cars only a mile away. About 230 demonstrators were arrested for vandalizing and setting fires. They’re charged with felony rioting and face a potential 10 years in prison and a fine up to $250,000. By contrast, when Obama, the 44th president, was sworn in, there wasn’t a single infraction. Apparently, that is the disposition of the Trump-haters as they did this same thing when their candidate of choice lost last November.
Will it be a rocky road ahead? Who thought the Great Recession would be the slowest recovery in history? Arizona still hasn’t recovered all the jobs lost. People who put Donald Trump in office see him as a successful businessman who knows what needs to be done to be a successful President. He believes in Capitalism which is what this great country was built on.
Lincoln who faced a divided nation much like we’ve had for the past ten years, said, “that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom—and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.” Our Declaration states “that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”
If honest Abe saw our federal government today he would be appalled. In 2012, Jeff Daniels of The Newsroom said, “America is NOT the greatest country anymore.” He said we sure used to be, we stood up for moral reasons, passed and struck down laws for moral reasons, sacrificed, cared about our neighbors, made technological advances, cured disease, and cultivated the world’s greatest artists and economy. He said, “We didn’t identify ourselves with who we voted for in the last election and we didn’t scare so easy. The first step in solving any problem is realizing there is one.”
So many people believed all the media and the polls last fall to find they were so far off from reality; it’s surprising the networks are still surviving. Perhaps this is a wake-up call for Americans that the government could be wrong and America isn’t what it used to be. We must recognize there are problems and realize that we need to return to our roots because that is what made us great.
Let’s demonstrate hope and work together to bring the pride back. We need to courageously confront the negativism with genuine patriotism believing in America again. Should we do this, there will be a better tomorrow.
